SOUNDING THE LABYRINTH

The image is taken from a performance of my composition "Sounding Ariadne's Thread", August 10, 2008 on Toronto Island. The piece is composed for a 20-voice  choir to sing while walking the Chartres Cathedral labyrinth pattern with accompanying soundtrack.  The concert was presented by New Adventures in Sound Art.

THE LABYRINTH is an ancient circular mandala shape pattern found in many cultures around the world and has a 5000-year-old history.  The pattern is thought to be inspired by the spirals and circles found in nature, and unlike a maze, the labyrinth has only one path that leads to the center and out again.

an exploration of the relaitomship between sound and sacred geometry

Labyrinth walking... windingnature of the pathway that leads in the center and back out to the starting point.  Experience the patterns and rhythms of the labyrinth through vocal sounding or toning.

The High Park labyrinth is a replica of the model found within the 13th-century Cath├ędrale de Notre-Dame de Chartres, 80Km south of Paris.  Chartres was a medieaval Eruopean wisdom school that practiced the arts of sacrted geometry, astrology, and musical theory among others.  The pattern of this labyrinth is a unique expression of sacred geometry and holds many intriguing relaitonships and rhythms in the way its pathway unfolds.  Through sound and walking, we will create an embodied experience of these sacred geometry relationships which were created to reflect the underground currents of the earth.  The original cathedral was built upon a site known for its powerful earth energies and was a place of ritual healing.

Through our walking and sounding with conscious intention, we will enable our bodies to become more deeply attuned or entrained with the earth and underground waters of our local area and deepen our communion and relaitonship with Gaia and all beings in the natural world who sustain us.
